Adobe Updates Digital Publishing Suite with Analytics, iPad Mini, Kindle Fire HD 8.9 Compatibility

Adobe is releasing the latest edition of its Digital Publishing Suite. Version 24 includes expanded device support and analytical capabilities, among other upgraded and new features.

Compatibility with New Tablets, Browsers

In recognition of the increasing popularity of tablet computing, Adobe now makes Digital Publishing Suite (DPS) apps developed for iPad2 by Single Edition, Professional and Enterprise users automatically compatible with the new iPad Mini. Adobe is also preparing for the scheduled November 20 launch of the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD by allowing DPS apps to be compatible with the device as long as developers create a 1900 x 1200 folio.

Furthermore, any DPS-created content socially shared by a reader can be viewed on Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8 web browsers. And readers of DPS-created content using iOS devices can download a folio and perform other tablet-based activities outside the app while the folio downloads, as long as the app is updated to R24.

Analyze This

App usage analytics for Site Catalyst users provide data such as number of times an app is opened, how long readers use it, number of days it is read and times of peak usage. Site Catalyst users can also analyze URL data such as how many readers click on hyperlink overlays associated with a URL and web content overlays, as well as how URLs are opened (i.e., via browser, app, etc.).

New analytical capabilities also provide insight into reader data such as type, model, OS, manufacturer and screen size of reading device, as well as the type and carrier of the device connection used.

Let It Flow

Workflow enhancements allow designers to simultaneously update multiple articles, resume publishing after an error from the point of failure rather than the beginning and select folio orientation in advance. In addition, error messages include links to relevant Knowledge Base articles.

Adobe ‘Leans Heavily’ on Digital Publishing

The Next Web feels Adobe is “leaning heavily on its digital publishing efforts” with this latest update of Digital Publishing Suite, as well as other recent DPS activity such as the Single Edition which does not require coding, released earlier this year. The Next Web also endorses Adobe’s embrace of iPad mini apps with version 24 of DPS, citing observers who predict “the iPad mini will become the most popular model, leaving the larger version for more specialized use cases.”

Fending Off App Press

While an IT provider as established as Adobe doesn’t have to seriously worry about being pushed out of the way, Adobe may have the challenge posed by App Press in the back of its mind as it unveils the latest, greatest iteration of DPS. In June, App Press, the provider of a Web-based CMS designed to enable the creation of code-free iOS and Android apps, positioned itself as a direct competitor to Adobe DPS.

Promoting its platform as having no software to install and a user interface that resembles Photoshop, App Press is clearly targeting users who seek convenience and flexibility in developing iOS and Android apps. The vendor touts its signature platform as providing app developers with a “blank canvas” where they can upload content layers with touch-enabled functionality. “Hotspot layers” allow links within the app or to external sites with linear or non-linear navigation.

Ultimately, App Press will likely be used by more artistic designers while Adobe DPS will remain the favored tool of more corporate enterprise designers, but even an artist might like access to detailed analytics and streamlined workflow.

Risk Management: Strong Governance Means Solid Foundation

Successful organizational risk management is not accomplished in a vacuum.

Without the benefit of executive support, success is fleeting and inconsistent. Without clear message, risk management programs flounder. Without shared vision and strategic priorities which align with corporate mission and goals, risk management programs fail without exception.

Involve Management

To build your program for success, you must first begin by involving executive management. Understanding their concerns and perceptions of organizational risk and risk tolerance can prove invaluable and serve as an impetus to better enable prioritization. Consider formally establishing a Governance Committee composed of key business leaders to maintain continued momentum, better determine programmatic direction and to ensure that proper consideration is given to critical organizational business unit requirements.

It is also recommended that a third-party organizational risk assessment addressing current organizational risk state and applicable legal, regulatory and standards-based compliance be performed. Given outside, qualified expert determination of the severity of known risks and the identification of unknown risks, including any compliance gaps, high risk vulnerabilities may begin to be remediated and the overall threat landscape better understood. With remediation efforts composing the majority of short-term strategy, the Governance Committee may thereafter begin to focus on both medium and long-term strategies.

Establish Responsibilities, Procedures

To then effectively execute upon determined strategy, organizational roles and responsibilities should be reviewed and developed to ensure that appropriate information security and risk management duties are assigned to all personnel with operational security and risk management roles further defined.

The Governance Committee should also require that separation of duties and principles of least privilege are adhered to with (perhaps dependent to some degree on the overall size of the organization) operational security and audit responsibilities assigned to dedicated staff which directly report to one or more leadership roles. Generally, it is this leadership which will have principle responsibility for guiding Governance Committee efforts and ensuring that committee determined strategic direction is successfully implemented.

While qualified personnel are, of course, a primary concern, documentation should not be undervalued. Developing supporting policy and documenting established procedures, security architecture, sensitive data flows as well as data inventory, ownership and retention details provides important reference and opportunity for periodic review and analysis.

A standardized methodology also better allows for consistency of process with a far greater likelihood of desired outcome. Additionally, when aligned with configuration and change management efforts, overall performance and service delivery levels may be recognizably strengthened. Further, training efficiencies and knowledge capture benefits may also be realized.

Continued Review

Given executive support and cohesive direction, it becomes important that security operations and risk management personnel monitor organizational risk on an ongoing basis while remaining cognizant of established programmatic goals and compliance requirements. Monitoring practices should, at a minimum, include daily log review, altering processes, quarterly internal and external vulnerability scanning, annual internal and external penetration testing, and internal and external risk assessment completed on at least an annual basis.

Movable Type Unveils Version 5.2: An Improved Rich Text Editor, Cloud Support Top the Updates

Movable Type, the popular blog software, has released version 5.2, with added support for cloud computing environments.

Movable Type is a popular open source content management and online publishing platform for creating blogs and websites, and it is free for redistribution, use or modification.

Revised Rich Text Editor

First released in 2001, Movable Type was designated as free software under the GNU General Public License in 2007. There are now more than a thousand plugins available for the platform, and it is used by such sites as BarackObama.com, Oracle’s blogs, NBC Universal and BritneySpears.com.

New features in version 5.2 include a revised rich text editor for web pages and blogs, which is designed to be more customizable, browser-friendly and AJAX-friendly.

Version 5.2 can be used under the nginx+PSGI environment, providing support across a range of server environments, including cloud computing virtual servers, CMS servers or content servers. The update also enables collections of blogs to be managed in a multi-blog environment, such as combining data from multiple blogs via the enhanced template language.

A user dashboard now helps to centralize functions commonly used by admins, authors and moderators. There is a new revision history of such CMS objects as blog templates or entries, improved AJAX-based sorting and searching features, and an enhanced list management framework for dealing with large amounts of data.

Authenticated SMTP, Browser Support

With new sitepath restriction, a System Admin can limit the publishing of content to the part of a given file system that is used by the Movable Type server. Email notifications can be sent with authenticated SMTP, and custom fields’ performance has been improved in order to provide faster rebuilds of custom field data.

The update officially supports the Google Chrome browser, starting with the latest version, Internet Explorer 8 and 9, and the latest versions of Safari and Firefox.

Other changes include a mandatory requirement that a system email setting be defined and, if it hasn’t been, the system will prompt for a system email address. A starting day of the week can be set for the calendar by the user, so that each week starts with that day. If none is set, Sunday is used as the default.

Six Apart's acquisition in 2010 left many wondering what would happen to Movable Type where it didn't really seem to fit into the plan, but it has remained an active open source solution with an active community. Japanese subsidiary Six Apart KK has taken over complete responsibility for the web content management system and we are finally seeing more updates as a result.

WoodWing Enterprise 8: New Collaboration Tools, Support for Adobe Creative Suite 6

WoodWing Enterprise 8 Released, Includes Support for Adobe CS6 WoodWing's Enterprise 8 multi-channel publishing system has been released. It includes new collaboration features, performance updates, and support for Adobe's digital publishing system.

Because WoodWing is popular among newspaper and magazine publishers, support for Adobe Creative Suite 6 — particularly its two key components, InDesign and InCopy — should be welcome.

New Features + Future Release Teased

One of the main highlights of Enterprise 8 is an annotation feature that will look very familiar to long-time users. Commenting on in-progress documents is now possible, notes can be approved or rejected, and comments can be answered.

screenshot-woodwing8-2012.jpg
New collaboration features like commenting on in-progress documents had been requested by WoodWing customers.

Under the hood, performance updates have made uploading large files into Content Station up to three times faster. That's because WoodWing has added the JSON and AMF protocols in Enterprise 8. AMF is the format used by Adobe Flash, and that means Enterprise 8 can build Flash movies across all devices.

Additionally, Enterprise 8 has made some internal changes to accommodate any future upgrades or support for publishing industry requirements. Woodwing has hinted that those future updates could include better reporting and digital asset management tools.

Also inside Content Station, the Planning Tab has been extended to allow issues to be created across channels. This should speed up starting tasks and creating dossiers (what WoodWing calls articles or stories). The final new feature is a tool for setting up a specific workflow for archive files (such as zip files) or presentations that may have an alternate route in the workflow.

Adobe-WoodWing Partnership

For the past year, WoodWing has been an Adobe partner on its Digital Publishing Suite, and that is one reason for the tighter integration of Flash and InDesign. However, with the addition of the JSON protocol, Enterprise 8 is also more extensible with other third-party software. That means any of WoodWing's authorized partners can integrate Enterprise 8 and Content Station with their preferred add-ons.

Microsoft Extends Mainstream Support for Windows 2008 to January 2015

Microsoft has decided to extend the mainstream support window for Windows Server 2008. The change is likely welcome news for businesses running the operating system that don’t have immediate plans to move to Windows 2012.

Stay of Execution

Microsoft originally planned to transition Windows Server 2008 from free, mainstream support to fee-based, extended support on July 9, 2013. Customers will now receive two additional years of free support, which will end on January 15, 2015. The company made a similar move with Windows XP (whose support will finally end in April 2014), but the Windows 2008 support extension was not driven by customer demand. It was due to the release date of the next version of Windows.

Microsoft typically offers five years of free, mainstream support for every Windows release. However, the release date of a product’s successor can also impact the free support duration. Customers receive free Windows support for 24 months after a new version of Windows ships, if that date is later than the normal five year window. Once mainstream support ends, customers have five years of optional, paid, extended support. During extended support, security updates remain free, but other updates require a fee and a hotfix contract. Once all support windows end, Microsoft stops releasing all updates or fixes for the product.

The Future of Microsoft’s Software

In addition to the support Window extension, Microsoft also released a new Community Technology Preview (CTP) for SQL Server Service Pack 1. The release includes:

  • Improved AlwaysOn Availability Group migration
  • Better query capabilities over XML data
  • Better SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) for Express users

Microsoft’s profits are heavily driven by Windows, Office and its server products. However, the company’s dominance continues to be challenged by cloud-based alternatives. It’s obvious that while Microsoft must focus on continuing to innovate the capabilities of its core product families and strengthen its cloud offerings, the company should also consider its support strategy.

Engaging with Microsoft’s support organization is not always a pleasant experience. Additionally, some customers may develop a lower tolerance for software having an end-of-life model when most cloud solutions offer lifelong updates (for a monthly- or use-based fee, of course). Microsoft and other vendors may need to start rethinking their release and support strategies.

IBM Connections 4 Gains New Social Capabilities

IBM is unveiling version 4.0 of its Connections social business platform, featuring new social capabilities as well as support for open standards.

Connections 4 Delves into Twitter/Facebook Territory

A new microblogging feature allows Connections users to attach files their personal status messages and also tag them with searchable Twitter-style hashtags. Status updates also can be reposted and “liked.” These features make Connections postings more like both Twitter and Facebook postings.

connections-social.png

Earlier this week, Web publishing platform WordPress started offering VIP users Twitter-like instant blogging functionality through its new Liveblog Add-on. The add-on is designed to make WordPress competitive with Twitter as a means of providing quick, real-time commentary and updates, and IBM appears to be gearing up Connections as an alternative to Twitter and Facebook for business users, as well.

Social Analytics, Communities Updated

Existing Connections social analytics capabilities have been strengthened with system-wide metrics that make more than 100 new reports available and trend-tracking functionality. Updates to Connections Communities include a new view called “Recent Updates” which provides a centralized place to see what is happening in a community, a community activity stream that provides access to approved third-party applications and a wall for status updates (another Facebook-like feature).

In addition, this release introduces new support for open standards such as ActivityStrea.ms, OpenSocial and OAuth2.

connections-communities.png

Connections 4 also offers mobile support and starting September 20 will give users the ability to have access to and manage their mail and calendar content directly from IBM Connections. IBM supports IBM Lotus Domino and Microsoft Exchange environments.

Meeting Market Expectations

With its new version of Connections, IBM may overcome criticism of the platform leveled by industry observers such as Josh Dormont of the Collaboration for Good blog, who in a post earlier this year opined about what he saw as shortcomings of Connections. Although Dormont said “only organizations with heavy-handed IT departments were going to love (Connections),” he added that Connections benefits from “agile, constant improvement and a deep focus on building tools to meet business needs.”

Dormont went on to say that considering its resources IBM should deliver a better social intranet solution out of the box and negatively commented on Connections as a “networking platform first and a collaboration platform second,” compared to Salesforce, which created its CRM collaboration platform before launching its Chatter networking platform.

The latest version of Connections includes significant upgrades to both networking and collaboration functionality, so it will be interesting to see how the blogosphere — and customers — react.

Moxie Software Adds VirtuOz Virtual Agents to Chat Spaces

VirtuOz, Inc., a provider of intelligent virtual agents (IVAs) for online marketing, sales and support, is rolling out a packaged integration with Moxie Software’s Chat Spaces for sales and services. The integrated solution is designed to provide online consumers with seamless transition from virtual to live support.

Integration Offers Online Customer Service Personalization, Convenience

Specific features of the VirtuOz integration are intended to provide greater personalization, convenience and information to the customer. These include:

  • Queue Traffic Controller: Directs customers to a live chat queue based on their individual sales or support needs. Configurable settings also allow the virtual agent to help direct customers to queues with the shortest wait time.
  • Queue Countdown: Displays the wait time to the customer.
  • Customer Conversation Knowledge Transfer: Automatically transfers the virtual agent-customer conversation to the live chat agent.
  • Best Practice Channeling UX:  Allows the user to stay in the same interface regardless of channel.
  • Voice of the Customer: Analyzes both IVA and live chat conversations to suggest continuous improvements to the virtual agent.

Integrations Help Moxie Extend Spaces Value

Integrations such as the new partnership with VirtuOz help Moxie extend the value of its Spaces social collaboration suite. In April, Moxie integrated Salesforce.com’s Service Cloud into Spaces Connect, giving customers more complete access to the answers they need and making it easier for workers to help those customers because there will be more ways for them to work together, including email and chat.

A Good Chat Helps Everyone

Moxie is also working internally to bolster the capabilities of its Spaces Chat tool. In May of this year, Moxie added a new feature in Chat Spaces that allows customer service agents engaging customers in chat sessions to seek assistance from internal experts, whom normally would be excluded from the interaction.

The new chat features also allow a customer service agent to simultaneously engage multiple experts. For example, a customer service agent for a bank could seek help in resolving a customer’s issues involving both a checking account and a mortgage loan. Communication with experts is conducted internally via Moxie’s social media mechanisms, so the customer does not directly communicate with internal employees.

VirtuOz May Prove Good IVA Partner

VirtuOz may prove a good choice as a partner to deliver IVA functionality to Moxie Chat users. According to a recent post on the Customers.com Technologies blog, VirtuOz virtual agents’ best capability is their “range of virtual agent interaction styles.” VirtuOz virtual agents can “converse” with customers and use their answers to automatically direct them to the best source of information, as well as perform tasks with case management and CRM systems on customers’ behalves, acting as customer proxies.

This type of advanced virtual customer service/support functionality sounds like a promising means of transitioning online customers to the live agent who is ready to provide the correct information and services.

Microsoft Goes Back to School and Gets Smart: SharePoint 2013 & Education Services

shutterstock_82790251.jpgSometimes Microsoft gets a good idea and then doesn’t follow through on it. This is the case with SharePoint and support for education. There’s a long history here and Microsoft appeared to drop a major opportunity. But SharePoint 2013 and Office 365 may just change that.

Virtual Learning Environments

Or VLEs, as they are known, are virtual classrooms that enable students and teachers to communicate. There are class schedules, assignments, reading material, email, instant messaging, even online quizzes and tests. Some VLEs also offer videos and other online training options.

It’s rare that you go into a school today and don’t find at least one classroom using a VLE, and it’s an option that many students and parents like. However, there is often a lack of standards within a single school on the VLE platform used.

While school administrators put pressure on teachers to meet state technology standards, often via VLEs, they do not require a particular VLE to be used. As a result many teachers, even in the same school, use different platforms and it can be very confusing to both the student and parent to keep track of which VLE is used for which class.

The need for a uniform professional VLE is schools is critical for the success of both the student and the VLE. SharePoint could be that standard VLE. Did you know that a large number of education institutions in the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States use SharePoint as their VLE? For them it is a richer, more cost effective platform that can support not only VLE requirements, but also business processes and more. It’s the perfect market for a platform like SharePoint. But it hasn’t been easy. As many schools know, Microsoft didn’t fully understand the market in the beginning.

A History of SharePoint for Education

Long ago, in SharePoint 2003, there was the Class Server Project — a VLE. Class Server was a tool that you could use as a teacher to do an assignment or quiz to send to a class of students, who would then do the work and send it back. A leading expert, Dave Coleman, who owns a consultancy in the UK that specializes in the Education market and is a SharePoint MVP, told me that Class Server was excellent. Unfortunately, Microsoft dropped it when SharePoint 2007 came out.

At that point, Microsoft shifted the Class Server project over to Codeplex and renamed it the SharePoint Learning Kit. It’s not a project that Coleman uses for his clients and it has received much criticism in the education market. In the Codeplex documentation, the SharePoint Learning Kit is a Windows Services 3.0 solution that will also work on SharePoint 2007. It supports SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 and Class Server content, managed within document libraries.

In his business, Dave says he does not see many schools using it partly because it’s open source (the same issue that Moodle tends to come up against). To use it (or Moodle) you have to rely heavily on forums and the internet to resolve issues, there’s no formal support structure. Add to that a lack of resources available and it’s easy to see why it’s not a popular option for education institutions.

With the introduction of SharePoint 2010, Microsoft still chose not to offer education specific services, but it did promote it as a great platform for education. Considering the great strides Microsoft is making in the education market with its Office 365 for Education hosted solution, it seems strange that Microsoft hasn’t offered some out-of-the-box capabilities for its premise-based SharePoint. More surprising, is that few SharePoint partners offer education services.

Shoutlet Integrates with Foursquare for Location-Based Marketing

shoutlet-logo_2012.jpegShoutlet, a cloud-based social marketing platform, announced that it is now integrated with foursquare, the location-based friend-tracker.

The new support for foursquare enables the Shoutlet 5.0 platform to provide the ability to track check-ins, mayorships, photos and tips, and to generate multi-level reports for foursquare locations, in campaigns that offer location-based promotions.

Check-In Demos

The Shoutlet platform allows users to manage multiple venues from one dashboard, instead of separately logging into sites. In its announcement, Shoutlet pointed to Fairmont Raffles Hotels Internationals, which has to manage more than 500 brand and hotel-level venues worldwide.

With the new integration, users can check out all foursquare venues, a specific venue or a group in near real-time, in order to see check-ins, mayor changes, tips and photos.

A new layer of data is also being offered — check-in demographics that show age and gender, as well as sharing stats to better inform future specials. Those specials can be set up and managed for all or some venues through the dashboard. Social metrics, such as check-ins, can be established as triggers for more location-based specials, or for announcements on Facebook or Twitter, via Shoutlet’s campaign publishing tool, Social Switchboard.

Social Switchboard is designed to allow marketing teams to build their social media campaigns in advance, and then set a variety of pre-scheduled markers and milestones, which can cause specific content to be published.

A Package Deal

Shoutlet CEO Jason Weaver said in a statement that the company “set out to create a meaningful service for do-it-yourself marketers with features that our customers crave and will ultimately help them do their job better.”

In addition to the trigger-based Social Switchboard, the self-service, cloud-based Shoutlet Enterprise Social Marketing Platform offers professional-level design tools for social media, the ability to create and segment social profiles, tools for creating and distributing custom social media content, and the ability to generate and manage customer relationships and analytics.

Other features include a contest platform, HTML5 web app building and social commerce.

Shoutlet recently obtained US$ 15 million in venture capital funding from FTV Capital, after reportedly turning down funding offers from 15 other VC firms and acquisition offers from several companies.

Marketing vs IT: Who Drives the Customer Experience? #BMAthriving

For many organizations, their definition of customer experience falls into a customer support department heavily staffed to keep wait times for call centers low. But that’s missing the mark.

Customer experience truly stands as the one way to create a lifecycle story for customers across all channels. And with today’s über online customer, marketing spend has geared up to outpace IT in technology to get the right infrastructure in place. In fact, if Gartner research is any indication, CMOs will have larger IT budgets than CIOs within the next five years.

That was the discussion at a recent Business Marketing Association (BMA) regional conference in Denver. Designed to facilitate conversations between marketing and IT executives, the agenda included insights from leaders in customer experience, as well as experts in content marketing who help keep customers engaged across all channels.

Forget the Warm Fuzzies

Customer experience isn't just a feel-good tactic; it's a foundational element in acquiring, serving and cross/up‐selling customers. Marketers have to understand how to design the customer experience, enable it and use it to grow value because today, it’s the experience that defines organizations. There’s a big difference between problem solving for customers and creating delight. Customer support addresses the former while customer experience delivers the latter.

But to create a truly meaningful customer experience, companies have to be prepared to measure everything they do throughout the customer experience lifecycle, from strategy to delivery. Doing so requires a solid foundation in technology because it’s metrics that create understanding around where and how often a customer engages and then generates the ability to create a consistent experience across all touch points — social media, apps, email, a phone call, click-to-chat and so forth.

With the plethora of things and ways to measure customer experience, panelists talked about the need to simplify measurement. One approach is Net Promoter Score (NPS). NPS simplifies data collected into one number that can be tracked over time, reported quickly and allow for adjustments in processes rapidly.

Creating Digital Conversations

Since customer experience is intended to create meaningful relationships, one of the linchpins for making this happen is content.

If you expect customers to keep coming back to you, it’s because you have content that matters to them. Content creates conversations, but it has to be a two-way street. Some companies focus on listening to customers, which is an indisputable first step. But there also has to be a point when they engage. How would you feel if you were at a cocktail party and someone followed you around all night but never said a word? Creeped out, most likely.

Once you have your content marketing plan and platform in place, companies have to resist the urge to control the conversation. Communities want to interact, to comment, share perspectives and openly criticize what doesn’t work. That’s hard for some companies to stomach. But authenticity is a big part of the customer experience and building engagement.

Looking Ahead

Customer experience is a challenging world and will continue to become more complex over the next 24 months. In looking down the road, the panelists spotlighted some key trends:
