Google's Nexus 3G and 10-Inch Models Revealed

Google Nexus 7-w150.jpg Ahead of Google's big event, we've already seen the new Nexus phone leak out, now a new pair of tablets have been exposed to the world before their bow.

Tablets on the Range

Having just one tablet has officially gone the way of the dodo this week. First Apple breaks with its mono-strategy and brings us the mini model. Now Google is varying its own line with a 3G version of the 7" Nexus (handily leaked by the radio-emissions people at the FCC) and now a 10" model for those who like their tablets supersized, which was revealed after Korean sites starting waving the manual around.

This comes hot on the heels of a U.K. phone store showing off the new Nexus 4 smartphone, all before Google's big event on Monday. I'm sure the company will run the show as planned, pretty much as Apple does, and hope it has one or two real surprises to show the world. As with the Nexus 4, expect these devices to be Jelly Bean powered, while the 10" tablet will have a superb resolution of 2560×1600 for incredible video and image potential.

Tablets Going Places

The 7" 3G model will help users enjoy their tablet-based activities on the go, and increase the pressure for cheaper data rates and multi-device contracts from telcos, as evermore numbers of users take them out and about.

The 10" model will definitely remain an at-home affair for most. Perhaps it will replace the need for second TV sets in bedrooms as users settle in for a night's movie watching or web browsing with their new monster tablet.

Expect the full in-depth details to break out on Monday, along with decent images of the devices. While the 7" may retain the low-cost styling of the original Google Nexus 7, the 10" tablet will probably need some hefty construction to cage and protect the screen, so maybe design partner Samsung will have something special to show off in the vein of Apple's iPad mini and Microsoft's Surface reveal.

Apple iPad Mini vs. Microsoft Surface, Let Battle Commence

applelogo.png San Jose is the place to be, as Apple confirms the 23 October launch event for the iPad Mini, setting it up for a battle royale with Microsoft's new Surface tablets.

Contenders, Ready…

Okay, these two devices aren't direct competitors, however by launching around the same time, it gives the watching world a grandstand view of a real Microsoft vs. Apple battle, something we haven't really seen before since the early and recent-era PC days.

Microsoft unveiled the pricing of its Surface tablets earlier, which pitches it directly against the full-size iPad range, with the addition of its unique cover/keyboard. While the iPad Mini is designed to compete more with the Kindle Fires and Nexus tablets of this world, its premium quality and iOS experience will make for interesting comparisons from users.

With Apple having confirmed the news of a 23 October event, which will show off the new Mini iPad the new iTunes, a new Retina MacBook, perhaps new Mac Minis and maybe some other goodies, it might be quite a show.

But with all this news leaking out well in advance, Apple really needs to ditch the "look at our magic" presentations and do something new and different. A more hard-hitting, consumer focused event with content subscriptions to broaden the ageing iTunes approach will be greatly appreciated.

In the Eye of the Consumer

So, with the holiday season looming, buyers will have a wider choice of tablets than ever before. Apple, Android makers and Microsoft will all be promoting their devices heavily. Certainly, Apple's market dominance will be watered down come next year, but Apple will be happy maintaining its margins and the sense of "best-of-breed", regardless of how true (or not) that perception is.

Microsoft will be looking to set a decent base on which to grow the Windows 8 (and Windows RT) base. But, it risks user confusion and fragmentation from its multi-OS approach, while Android makers will be looking to pick up on the massive Android smartphone user base.

The iPad Mini really could be the first Apple device in some time that fails to impress, as it launches into such a crowded, vibrant market. While Surface tablets may lack the vibrancy of the iOS ecosystem, if it takes off in numbers, that advantage could soon be wiped out. So, there is much to play for from all parties and it will be the mis-steps and mistakes that are more likely to be remembered than the successes.

Apple Confirm iPhone 5 Event for 12 September

applelogo.png The Cupertino-based company has sent out the invites for next week's launch event for the iPhone 5. With the iPad Mini likely shifted to October, expect Apple to focus strongly on the new hardware and software features as it struggles to offer differentiation in an increasingly level playing field of superphones.

What's in a Name?

The Apple invite offers little in the way of hints to dig for, with a great big shadowy "5" suggesting the device will actually be called iPhone 5 rather than any of the other suggested monikers. The phone's design and iOS 6 features have been discussed to death, with most of the physical features leaked as prototype parts or actual components.

apple12.jpg

Hitting New Heights?

As usual, there will be a massive wave of hype as the product is shown off in full form for the first time. Even with the new design, there are so many varied devices with screen resolutions, mega-cameras, novel materials and built-in features, that Apple could struggle to stand out from the crowd.

This time it will be the new software features that really need to shine, to help keep up Apple's momentum. After the relatively niche appeal of Siri, what can Apple add this time beyond the shown-in-beta maps and other tweaks?

The new iPhone should be available for pre-order straight after the event (and after the Apple store has recovered from the inevitable surge and crash). it is likely to go onsale around the 21 September, but with so many users on long term contracts or having migrated to other devices, the days of huge queues flooding stores (outside China) are likely to be over.

Samsung's Trio of ATIV Tablets Show Microsoft's Splintered Future

sam_ativ.jpg While a lot of the hype at yesterday's Samsung Unpacked event was around the new Galaxy Note 2, PC users will be taking a keen look at the company's Windows RT and Windows 8 tablet PCs with a range of underlying technologies.

A Three-Pronged Unified Approach?

So, this is what Microsoft's unified Windows 8 dream has come down to, a major partner offering three tablets, running three different processors and two different operating systems. These are potentially very crazy times for buyers.

Samsung showed off three Windows tablets under the all-things-Windows 8 brand of ATIV, they are called the Tab, Smart PC and Smart PC Pro. They run on ARM with Windows RT, Intel Atom with Windows 8 and Intel Core i5 with Windows 8 Pro respectively.

sam_ativ.jpg

The three devices look substantially similar, with a stylish, executive, aesthetic, but will sit at three very different price points with various screen sizes, resolutions, storage and memory options. The Tab comes with a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4, 10.1" screen, 2GB of RAM and up to 64GB of storage expandable via a microSD slot.

Playing Happy Families

A dedicated tablet, compared to its PC-in-disguise larger brothers, it is the acid test of Microsoft's new strategy. Will users really buy a Windows-with-MS-Office tablet that isn't quite a full PC when there are so many other options? With an army of rival modestly-priced tablets out and on the way, selling these for around €699 ($875) is a big ask.

The Smart PC and Smart PC Pro are competing in the more traditional PC space (see more spec details on the official site), albeit in a very tablet style, with the detachable keyboard likely to be a standard feature on most devices come next year. Even these will be under huge pressure as the first full wave of Ultrabooks offers full-spec, lightweight computing, and prices start to come down.

Perhaps it is a masterstroke for Microsoft and partners, but it looks like a recipe for consumer confusion. If you go into a store and ask for a PC today, you can get a rough idea of price/performance, but with dozens of competing models like Samsung's ATIV family on the shelf, things could hardly be less clear.

Amazon Joins the Event Party, 6 September for Kindle Fire 2 and, Perhaps, A Smartphone

amazon_store_logo_2011.jpg

It is officially party season for gadget lovers, as Amazon joins all the other major smartphone and tablet makers with an event to announce its latest wares, scheduled for early next month.

Reorganize Your Diary

Add another date to your burgeoning diary for media phone or tablet events in the next few weeks. Amazon is inviting the press to a major launch on 6 September in Santa Monica, with the likely topic of discussion being the Kindle Fire 2 and, maybe, an Amazon smartphone.

So, just to refresh your memory, the launch event line up is as follows:

29 August - Samsung Galaxy Note 2

5 September - Microsoft/Nokia Windows Phone 8

6 September - Amazon Kindle Fire 2, possibly a smartphone

12 September - Apple iPhone 5, possibly iPad Mini

Device Frenzy

With all these devices hitting the shelves shortly after their announcements, the stores will be packed with new product, review sites will be screaming the scores out, and the typical consumer might feel rather put upon by all the pressure to upgrade to a new phone.

We also have HTC possibly launching a 5inch-screen One X model, then there's the Windows 8 tablet launch in October, making it a very busy selling period. What it does mean is that the older generations of devices will be being sold for great bargain prices come the Black Friday holiday sales, as stores try to clear old stock.
