It’s been a DAM busy week, so let’s get started. In recent digital asset management news, America’s massive Digital Public Library opens its virtual doors, Daminion and Razuna update, Tandem unveils its cloud-based Vault and the DAMMYs open again for submissions.
Razuna Updates
Razuna is out with a Beta 1 version 1.6 of their open source DAM software. The company said that, even though it’s called a Beta, the new version has been in production with many of its customers for several months. Enhancements include a new plugin to facilitate Workflow, a White Label option to embed and customize Razuna, support for Akamai’s CDN and an option to watermark images.
Welcome, Digital Public Library of America
Say hello to a great new American institution. Built on a vision that began in the 1990s, the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) has launched, with free online access to millions of books, photographs, manuscripts, sounds, moving images and other assets from various American libraries, archives and museums. The DPLA provides a portal and a search engine for education, as well as a platform and API to create novel learning environments.

The DPLA said it will also serve as “an advocate for a strong public option in the twenty-first century in support of access to free public libraries. The effort is funded by the Sloan and Knight Foundations, the Arcadia Fund in the U.K. and two U.S. federal agencies, the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Daminion Tops 1.0
DAM Software Provider, Daminion Software has one purpose, to create inexpensive DAM software for small teams. The company has recently topped the 1.0 mark, moving from its January release of version 0.9.8B of its Daminion Server to 1.0 RC1 this past week. The new version offers the ability to stamp images with geo-location coordinates and locate them visually on a map, as well as enhanced XMP metadata handling and improved compatibility with Adobe Creative Suite.
Tandem Vault
Outdoor photo/motion clip licensing agency Tanden Stills + Motion has announced a new tool for finding, managing, storing and delivering digital assets via a secure cloud. The software, Tandem Vault, was built from the ground up and features a browsing grid for quickly viewing images, the ability to handle video files as well as stills, support for 170 RAW camera formats and an easy-to-use interface. DAM systems, said CEO Ian Shive in a statement, “does not need to look and feel like a trip to the doctor’s office nor should only an IT admin" know how to use it.
Visual SKUs Integrates with OptiCat
DAM software vendor Visual SKUs has announced that its software now integrates directly with OptiCat, a supplier-owned data cooperative. Visual SKUs’ DAM software is used to create digital asset profiles that include a product list, image formatting specs and image delivery method and frequency. Manufacturers send product images with their profiles to their trading partners via the OptiCat data repository. With the integration, images and profiles can now be prepared and then automatically sent to OptiCat without humans handling the delivery.
It’s DAMMYs Time
It’s that time of year again. We’re not referring to summer vacation planning, but to the opening of the submission period for Creatasphere’s fourth annual DAMMY Awards. Categories include DAMMY of the Year, Best Storage, Archive and/or Preservation Solution and Best Example of Asset and Media Repurposing. The entry period runs from April 22 until August 30, and the winners will be presented in October in New York City.
