Feedly Releases Search, Secure Browsing Features For a Fee with Feedly Pro Launch

customer experience: feedly proNews reader Feedly expanded its product offerings today with an alternative version of its service: Feedly Pro.

Say Hello to Feedly Pro

Up until now Feedly has been a free service that enables users to track news and other updates, but as of today users have more than one Feedly option. The company has introduced Feedly Pro, a service that is designed to bring give users more features — for a fee.

For US$ 5 a month or US$ 45 a year, users will have HTTPS support for a more secure browsing experience, an article search function so that users can search for content within their feeds, an integration with Evernote and premium support services so that problems that Pro users have are fixed before those who use the free version of Feedly.

Despite being launched this morning, Feedly Pro is now sold out, but the company has plans to offer the service to more users in the coming weeks, along with a few new features. Those who have access to a Pro account should also note that they can vote on what kind of feature they would like to see added first.

Feedly Pro is currently available in the desktop, but it will soon be added to the mobile and cloud apps. Also, if a user decides after a few days they want to revert back to the free version of Feedly they can do so and receive a refund — as long as it's within seven days of purchasing Feedly Pro.

Moving Ahead of the Competition … or Not

For many news sites, including CMSWire, Feedly has been positioned as one a top contenders to replace Google Reader which shut down at the beginning of July. It appears that the company is trying to set itself apart from similar services like Digg and Bloglovin, with the addition of features like this paid option, RSS integrations and the Feedly Cloud. This has been a mostly successful decision.

Feedly had 4 million users prior to Google’s big announcement, but that number tripled to 12 million users, as of the end of May,” wrote Jon Russell.

Despite these numbers, Feedly Pro isn’t going over well with many users according to Ricardo Bilton, who looked at customer feedback on Feedly’s message boards. He found that many users didn't like that some features, such as the search and security, were only available in Feedly Pro.

The full impact of Feedly Pro isn't something that can be measured just yet, as the service has to become more widely available and used for longer than a day before this can be determined.
